Review on 🎧 Immerse in Cinematic Audio: Sony HT-X9000F Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer by Cody Henry

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Sony quality and good overall sound, but where's the bass?

I needed a new soundbar that could handle HDR and support some of the newer audio formats. I have an older Sony CT660 soundbar which is very reliable and sounds great. This Sony is actually smaller and you can feel some cost savings on the physical panel itself, but then it comes down to audio processing and sound quality. Sony doesn't disappoint in terms of clarity and sound quality, but where it literally falls short is in the subwoofer. The subwoofer is weak and flat and lacks real punch. I cranked the subwoofer level up to +6dB and the difference was almost the same. The bass and subwoofer were much better on my old CT660, if a bit muddy. Part of this may be due to the fact that this sub has a front firing port, while the CT660 closes and fires downward. When I have time I'll see if I can hook up an old CT660 subwoofer to this panel and hope it helps. The subwoofer has built-in video-based setup menus, which is nice, but every time it's turned on it shows an on-screen selection menu for a few seconds and then disappears. I looked for other options, but those that went beyond HDR and DV didn't support anything other than PCM and Dolby Surround. Considering I bought this Sony on sale for $399 it's a good deal, I just wish they'd upgraded the subwoofer. Update: After 3 months I have updated my review as the bass is weak and the subwoofer just sucks. If you can get any decent bass out of this thing, it will distort the subwoofer. The old 660's I had had better bass, although not as crisp as this unit, but sounded better overall. I'll wait for a good sale later this year and replace it. Sony should offer the option to pair with another subwoofer, even my old 660 subwoofer would work better with this system.
