Unpopular Opinion: There is a better choice at this price point

I don't really like prang colors. You can certainly make art out of them and this set is much lighter than washable prang cakes and less flat than the cheap popular round cakes on the market. However, you can get much better value for money on other kits in this price range. Think Tinge/Superior half shells in a metal can rather than a premium box and the fact that the paints have pigment information, lightfastness ratings and typical watercolor titles. help you learn. In comparison, Prang has neither a name nor pigment information. GenCrafts, Mei LIang Pretty Excellent and Tinge/Superior offer more brightness and behave like school colors. Prang is more of an artisanal strain. They are easy to re-wet, but most colors dry out a little paler and duller than other brands. Other brands also offer more standard boxes, allowing you to work with other brands as you grow on your watercolor journey. The proprietary Prang format doesn't mix well with others and the racks move around the box. The brush that comes with it is of poor quality. One of the great things about Prang is that they are AP certified non-toxic making them a great choice for young children. For older kids and those new to watercolor painting, I would recommend the half panel kits from Tinge/Superior, GenCrafts, or Mei Liang instead. If your budget allows, pick the Paul Rubens Artist, which is a definite step up from all of that.

Pros
  • AP certified non-toxic
Cons
  • Only available in black
