Works better without a vacuum

Purchased as storage for a 3 inch king size memory foam bed pad. Yes, you must put the item in your bag. I tried using a vacuum to evacuate the air as instructed, but was helped to roll it up and open it about 3 inches and then compress the air by alternately sitting on the bag and pressing it down and then quickly slide the bag. The zipper closed, more air came out. Does it look like the picture - heavily compressed? No ! But it's quite compressed, so we folded it in thirds and used the straps/handles that came with it. As a king-size player, I used extra string to tie them lengthwise to create a larger cube that fits in a larger box. The topper stays clean and semi-puckered which is what I wanted. If I had a 6 inch king mattress to cover and compress, I'm just not sure the bag would work. Also, I believe that the vacuum you need should be a powerful industrial vacuum. It definitely takes two people to finish the mattress or topper cover and then compress and roll it up. The straps are great. I find that the whole task will be easier on smaller mattresses. King size is a bit bulky but doable.
