Strong magnets delight. The metal is fused directly into the plastic surface so the pieces hold upside down while remaining lightweight. The plastic box closes tightly and stays closed (under heavy use the plastic may eventually fail, then it's held in place by a large rubber band). Plenty of room for things that actually have a bit of a thump - I can put fabric or notepads in there. The "hinges" are just extensions of the plastic so they can fail over time, but that's not a problem for me (a bit of duck tape after years of use). A 14 inch board and almost full size parts for $16 seems like a great value. I hope to make this set for life for late night study in bed or for easy transport to other places in my house as well as sporadic travel. It's lightweight, but I'd go for a size 12 inches or smaller if you want to carry it with you all the time. The plastic squares, while not fully painted, would likely get scratched if thrown around a lot in a car's trunk. I would have a plastic bag with me as a case. The chess pieces are beautifully crafted in Stanton's standard style with an aesthetically pleasing color cast (muted white and black, ebony and ivory). I actually like the feel of the plastic parts much better than the painted wood. The chess game on the silver and black squares is a feast for the eyes. Only one magnet needed some glue. I threw away the stones. Very satisfied with the product.
