As a simple calligraphy pasta maker, I've never invested in really expensive pens, but I've certainly bought many calligraphy "sets" over the years. The search continued for pens that feel good in my hand, draw lines well, don't bounce, don't require a lot of tapping or shaking to get the ink flowing again, and allow me to write fluently. Had I found this set sooner, I certainly wouldn't have felt the need to invest in so many awful sets that clutter my desk drawers today. The handle of the Lamy Joy is long and pointed; The scale just feels right in your hand. The handle is triangular in shape and is easy to hold for long periods of time without the need for a dead grip on the handle. Lamy fountain pens (Joy, Safari, Al-Star etc.) are known for the fact that the nibs can be changed easily. With a piece of tape you can remove one tip and put the other on the ink supply. Because this set of three ink supplies each comes with a separate calligraphy nib, all you have to do is unscrew one and screw in the other size. It couldn't be easier. But if you drop the pen and bend the tip, this part is easy to replace. Pens are available at many art and stationery stores and online. The steel tips supplied with this set are available in a variety of sizes: 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9. You can benefit significantly from all three. They're good for correspondence, note-taking, journaling, and 1.9 is great for slightly larger cards. (Compare this to some other calligraphy kits where the smallest tip is indistinguishable from a standard round pen tip and the largest tip makes it look like you're writing with a shovel blade.) Lamy cartridges are proprietary, however easy to find due to the popularity of the wide range of Lamy fountain pens. Although this kit does not include a Z-24 ink converter, you can easily and inexpensively find one and then use your own ink bottle to refill your pen. Not only does this give you control over the colors you use, it also transforms your writing. Some inks flow more freely than others, and this makes a big difference depending on what pen and paper you plan to use. The set comes in an attractive polished metal box with the Lamy Joy logo on the lid. Inside is a Joy pen, a cap, three ink tips, a box of cartridges, and a booklet that talks about the pen and shows you how to draw lines, although it doesn't include sample alphabets to copy. This set might be a bit more expensive than the ones you can find at the drug store or craft store, but you can write really smoothly with them without stuttering or scratching all over the paper. Lamy pens and inks are manufactured in Germany according to strict quality standards. Highly recommended.
