Review on πŸ“· REOLINK 8CH 5MP Home Security Camera System: High-Quality Wired IP Cameras and 8MP NVR with 2TB HDD for 24-7 recording, RLK8-520B2D2 by Julio Montano

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The slimmed-down camera firmware and NVR have a hard-coded NAT subnet

The video image is very good, but this kit has some serious flaws. First of all, the cameras supplied with this kit are different from the standalone cameras sold, although they share the same part numbers (RLC-410-5MP and RLC-420-5MP). The cameras in this set have crooked firmware that does not support P2P. This means that you cannot directly access the cameras via P2P. Another major downside is the NVR setup. It has a hard-coded NAT subnet of 172.16.25.X. The DHCP server on the NVR assigns the DHCP addresses 172.16.25.X to all cameras connected to the POE NVR ports. I spoke to Reolink technical support. They pointed out that it's hard coded in the firmware and you can't change the subnet IP address. The biggest problem is that the NVR does not allow traffic to this subnet. The net effect is that you don't have direct access to the cameras. You may be wondering why you need direct access to cameras? I am using an NVR to record 7x24 videos continuously, but I would like to use on-camera motion detection so that all motion-triggered recordings are saved to the SD card in each camera. But without direct access to the cameras, you cannot view the recorded images on the SD card. Buy a separate camera model rather than a kit. Updated 09/06/2019. The new NVR firmware version now supports motion video recording and playback. That means you can record 7x24 continuously and now you can select and play back motion-induced video too. Video caused by motion is highlighted in red in the playback progress bar.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options
