How strange it was when I received them as flat as possible on both sides. The packaging said I could sharpen them but I only used them as they arrived within a few months. They worked well as the blunt cut created sharp edges. I can tell you this, they go on and on and on. So a few months later, out of curiosity, I sharpened one with an electric pencil sharpener. It sharpened very well and now I have a blunt end and a pointed end. I don't know what this product is made of, but it's very solid and blends great. I use both oil and wax crayons and this blender brings color to both. At first I only tried them because they were Caran D'ache and I am always satisfied with their products. I was not disappointed and this is my favorite blender.
