I have a MacBook Pro 13" 2017 Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports. It has no ethernet ports. Sometimes I need to connect to Ethernet (RJ45). Hence the need for this adapter. I tested it by connecting it from a MacBook to an AirPort Extreme connected to a 2017 iMac via Ethernet using an Ethernet cable. I migrated a directory containing 4.4GB of 7700 files. Out of the box it worked great. No software settings, just plug and play. The adapter was a bit warmer than I expected.
