I was looking for teacups that would perfectly match my cast iron Okuyama teapot. As such, matcha cups, with their flat bottoms and often feminine floral motifs, did not fare well. However, more columnar designs will not resemble their patterns. However, the same goes for the cups, which too obviously mimicked the Okuyama cup, both the bottom and the top. In fact, few of the inexpensive traditional Japanese teacups are architecturally interesting despite their beautiful glaze. Finally, I wanted cups of hot tea to turn into a cauldron; again, nix matcha mugs to be processed after the blending has warmed the tea. Hario Yunomi teacups with their Aalto-like waves, their bowl shape offered the subtle but strong counterpoint I was looking for; moreover, the absolute transparency of her glass had the additional advantage of showing the color of the tea infusion in all its brightness. I was more skeptical about the heat shield factor; They work amazingly well, to my surprise. In addition, these mugs are ridiculously cheap. Verdict: perfect.
