I used meal replacement powder or Orgain protein powder (both chocolate flavored) for breakfast every morning and loved it. Eventually I settled on the vanilla flavor and each time I felt a slight burn in my throat. This prompted me to do some internet research, where I found an article in Consumer Reports that talked about testing protein powders for heavy metals and BPA as part of the Clean Label project. Of the approximately 100 products tested, Orgain had one of the highest levels of heavy metals in its product. I wanted to give the company the benefit of the doubt as I really like the taste and nutritional value of their powders, so I emailed the company asking about product testing from an independent company and if they shared any test results anywhere. The email I got back was basically a "blank" response that didn't answer my questions and only briefly mentioned that they don't use independent tests and don't share test results. I sent a follow-up email asking what they were doing in response to the Clean Label project findings about the high levels of heavy metals in their products; I never received an answer. I will no longer buy a product that is high in heavy metals when there are other protein powders that test their products regularly and share the results with consumers.
