All those little lanterns seem to die early in my house. The contact points in plastic AAA battery cases get rusty and this thing stops working unless I smack it or something until it blinks, and sometimes even then. So I've implemented a new policy: We will no longer store them standing on top of the lenses. Instead, we should lay her flat. My theory is that the heat generated on the back of the bulbs stays in contact with the cold metal contact points in the battery compartment and as a result the battery itself and this contact point create condensation. The condensate dries up and becomes rough. Dirt rusts and causes dirty contacts. From now on I put them away after use. I'm curious to see if they behave better in the future. Please wish me luck!
