Bad puns aside, the Purr Over coffee maker is a stylish way to make coffee for a cup. I also really admire that this is a more sustainable way of making individual cups than machines like Keurig that use these small pods that have become a landfill nightmare. The Purr Over Brewer consists of a two-part porcelain mug: the lower half as a traditional coffee cup and the upper half used to store the filter and coffee grounds. Preparing a cup of coffee is a short and simple process: place the grounds in a standard #2 coffee filter on top of the cup set; boil 12 ounces of water; let the water stand for 30 seconds (the best temperature for coffee is just below boiling point); pour some over the coffee grounds to moisten them (according to the instructions, this causes the coffee aroma to "bloom”); and then pour out the remaining water in a circular motion at a constant speed around the coffee grounds. When I've tried brewing coffee using the pour-over method in the past, I've failed - usually it was too weak - but this has been on hikes in less than optimal conditions. This time I followed the instructions exactly and got a much better result, albeit a little weaker than usual. I think I'll have to keep experimenting with the fineness of the grind; We buy whole bean coffee and use a grinder and I think the coffee needs to be ground a little finer than we normally use in our machine. The Purr Over Brew Set is made from thick, durable porcelain and is microwave safe. and can be washed in the dishwasher. The style is cute and minimal, slightly reminiscent of Hello, Kitty, and should appeal to any cat lover. This set cannot efficiently make large batches of coffee, so it's unlikely to replace our Cuisinart machine for my family's mornings. Coffee habit, but we're addicted enough to have the occasional cup of coffee later in the day and that's perfect for times like this. I think it would also be a good choice for a student or young person in a small apartment and/or someone who moves around a lot and doesn't want to lug around a lot of equipment.
