Pure Nostalgia

First of all, I would like to thank the manufacturers of Sport Grip for their continued excellence in creating these lace-up handlebar covers. This is a product that really makes me nostalgic and is the reason I bought it. There are a million and a half different types of steering wheel covers, most of which are sold in the store and stretch and stay the same. My parents put them in all of our cars as I grew from our '87 VW Cabriolet to our family Volvo station wagon. When I was a kid I used to ask my dad if I could get in a car and pretend to drive just because I liked the feel of those covers. The material looks like leather from the start and only gets better with age as sebum is absorbed into the coating over the life of the product. My first car was an 05 Scion Tc and I installed it quickly with the help of my father when I was 16 years old. The material is quite stretchy but you will need to follow the directions and heat it up a bit to prevent tearing (I used a high speed defroster to do this). It's very important that you follow the directions on the packaging (the perforated areas on the lid) or you'll wrap up the holes and it'll look pretty messy. This can be done with one person for the whole process, I did it myself. Make sure the package is tight and it gets pretty tricky at the very end. You have a few choices as to what to do. The instructions say to put it through two holes, which is easier said than done once you've wrapped it tight. As you can see from my photos I tied about four proper knots and then cut off the ends. I then took the extra length of rope and wrapped it around the knots I was making to create a very strong connection. In the end, using holes is a good idea, but I just didn't have the wiggle room in the lid to do this and came up with my own solution. Overall, this is a great product for people who love the classic cap and feel the riding experience. As a driving nostalgia this is unbeatable for me and I look forward to hosting many more with my kids one day.
