I bought this to replace an old Microsoft wireless mouse that only worked well on perfect surfaces. This mouse works well on most surfaces I've tried it on (my sofa, some books, some magazines, my hand, my cat) and seems to have a very long battery life (months of daily use). I noticed that the mouse jumps a bit on white semi-glossy surfaces, especially glossy white textbooks. So if that's literally the only surface you can use a mouse on, I'd recommend a vintage ball mouse. As a bonus, it has a great built-in feature when the mouse stops sending signals after a few tens of seconds. So if you stumble across it while browsing Netflix, the mouse cursor won't appear. To get it working again, just press any of the buttons and it's back in action. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that it has a very loud click. If I'm the only one awake in the morning, I usually cover the arm with the mouse with a blanket to muffle the noise. but for the price and for everything else super 5 stars.
