Review on 🌌 Astromania 1.25-Inch Filter Wheel with Five Filter Positions for Telescopes by David Bott

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good, but room for improvement

I bought this 1.25" disc because I love the design and performance of the 2" Astromania filter disc. Overall, the 1.25-inch version performs the same but not as well as the 2-inch version. In the 2-inch version, the wheel rotates on 5 fixed metal balls, so no parts fly around when the housing is opened to insert the filters. The 1.25" version was designed for 5 metal balls but mine only included 3. I thought it was defective and was going to send it back, but then I read the comments from other reviewers and found that they all only come with 3 balls. I'm not sure why, as 5 gives you smoother movement. Also, with the 1.25" version, the balls and springs are not fixed. Therefore, they are easy to lose and a bit difficult to mount the wheel. The 1.25" screw version is included. Despite these shortcomings, I prefer the 1.25" Astromania wheel over the 1.25" Solomark wheel, which I also have. The Solomark version looks very similar from the outside, but the wheel only rides on a single metal ball, so doesn't lock into every position as securely as the Astromania version, and generally doesn't always match the EP perfectly.

Pros
  • Use: The Astromania Multi-Filter Wheel has a handy number system that allows you to quickly place a filter of your choice in the beam path. When installing, simply make a note of each filter's ID number, then turn the thumbwheel until the correct number appears in the small notch on the filter wheel housing.
Cons
  • Some small things
