The first time I used a microphone to record my voice, I was convinced that it was defective and filled with the usual hissing, buzzing, and other sonic delights of a poorly tuned device. Then I noticed how sensitive it is and how easily it picked up the sound of the relatively quiet fan in the system unit. When the microphone's sound filters are optimized, the recorded voice sounds as if the speaker were sitting right next to you. Caution: not everyone requires the unrealistic sensitivity of a high-quality condenser microphone; in fact, the vast majority of people could get by with a dynamic microphone instead. I now realize that I fall into this latter category; however, now that I've spent so much time fine-tuning the microphone, there's no way I'm going back to the beginning.
