I bought this to accommodate our Christmas trip from North Carolina to Pennsylvania with 2 kids, 2 dogs and lots of presents in our 2012 Explorer. We couldn't possibly fit everything, so I bought this luggage rack. Unfortunately it rained for the entire 8 hours of the ride so it went through some pretty thorough field testing on the first ride. On the way back the weather was much better, so I could feel the wind noise and fuel consumption better. Here are my observations: 1. It is waterproof. We pulled into my parents garage to unload after an 8 hour drive in the rain and there wasn't a drop of water inside. I was deeply impressed. As a side note, I had the zipper facing backwards.2. This adds a noticeable amount of wind noise. At a speed of 55 km/h this is noticeable but not critical. At 75 mph it was still easy to hear on the radio. Sometimes it was quite annoying.3. This affects fuel consumption. Our consumption went down from around 25mpg to 21mpg. I attribute this to physics and not a product defect, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Overall, I'm glad I made this purchase. It allowed me to make the trip for a lot less money than a van (or Expedition!) and kept my stuff dry. I give it 4 stars because the noise made the trip less pleasant.
