I'm not a practical person and have never tried anything close to this installation. However, installation was straightforward. If I can do it, so can you - trust me. I installed this on the interior door leading from my kitchen to my basement where the trays are. One idea for getting cats to use it: After it was installed, I kept it open/supported it with some sort of tape when I wasn't home because my cats had trouble grasping the concept at first. But when I was at home I kept them closed and when I saw them hanging on the door I opened them and sometimes they crept in with my help. Eventually the first one understood, and then the other two learned by watching him. What worked in the end was that all three cats eventually ended up on the side of the tray by the door. I closed the valve on them. Since they had access to their stalls, it was more convenient for me to let them sit there for a while and try to figure out how to get by. I placed their food in plain sight on the other side of the door and that was the motivation they needed to slam the cat door. One of the cats thinks she needs to go through him like a cannonball, but the other two keep their feline grace and sneak through him quietly. Great door - got lots of compliments and have already recommended it to a few people.
