Pestle & Mortar is an Irish company co-founded by Sonia Deasy whose skills in this area seem more than vague as she describes herself. The origin story is that her husband who she assisted was a portrait photographer so she has seen many skin types up close, also she is of indian descent so she knows more about the connection between mind and body? I mean, this all seemed like, at best, a reason why everyone should trust their skin to their products. Despite this, the skincare line seems to be highly regarded, and this eraser balm has won multiple beauty awards from Image, RSVP, and Natural Health. Cleansing balms have something of a cult following, including outrageously expensive favorites like Eve Lom, their careful application, massage and removal has a ritualistic element that's soothing and spa-like, and they really do wonders for makeup removal. But for someone like me who rarely wears makeup and isn't too keen on the double cleanse usually recommended with these methods, cleansing with a balm is an occasional, non-daily affair. It smells really good. You take some firm balm and use your fingers to gently massage it into your skin (circling motions recommended), where it slowly turns into an oil. Some also recommend rubbing it into the palm of your hand first, and then into your skin. You then use a warm, damp cloth (many brands include a cloth, this one doesn't) to first dampen and then gently wipe the balm from your skin, then apply a second cleanser for a double wash or leave in any residual cleansing oil return. overnight for added peace of mind. The skin becomes really soft and the whole process is very relaxing and leaves the skin with a feeling of unique softness, but it takes a lot of time. Nothing to do when in a hurry. My favorite balm remains Elemis, which I even prefer to Eve Lom, and I find it a little less oily, but it's not bad at all. The cost is high but since I don't use it every day the jar lasts a long time and the cost is in line with other premium brands of balms.
