After a few weeks a musty smell appeared.

I think I prefer thin paper filters, this activated charcoal is becoming increasingly popular as its extra bulk seems to hold in moisture. I'm not entirely sure if it's the filter, but after a few weeks it seems to me that the filter is the source of the musty smell.
