So, it's real wood and they're great. The wood is natural and carved. I originally bought these to use as plant plates but they are MUCH good for that. Instead, I use the one on the bathroom counter as a perfume and lotion holder. It looks more like charging plates than dinner plates. You don't want them to get overly wet or leave standing water on them. They look porous. The instructions say you can smear with olive oil, beeswax, etc. I will use food grade oil for the meat blocks. Each has a unique and beautiful texture and each is paper wrapped in a brown gift box. The rest is used to display cakes and cheese for the holidays. Pretty pretty. They are about 1/4 inch thick.
