Revainrating 4 out of 5

Reliable 2ch 4k DVR that works out of the box

11/15/19TW finally contacted me. It was like pulling teeth, but problem solved. 4/5 stars for an overall great product but poor customer support. 11/03/19 Thinkware has still not contacted me. Overall I'm very happy with the dash cam and would choose it over the competition, but the lack of reminder clips isn't good as I mentioned. Got a replacement camera today. It arrived in excellent condition. My previous one was covered in scratches, which didn't bother me but is worth mentioning (the box was sealed with the label intact on the previous camera and also on this camera). The radar attachment does not work with the new camera; I can't turn it on in the recording settings. So I'm going to order a replacement now. Also, on 11/1/19, someone turned on the headlights of an old Ford Ranger to try and stop me. Fake cop. I wanted to grab a video to report a person but the video got cut off at 8pm. blank video for a few seconds with only audio. the camera is responsive and there is only part of the footage. Will replace the U1000. I will update the rating based on performance. Two stars so far. Let me down when I needed an ambient temperature below 68 degrees in the car. 72 degrees outside the car at night. I called customer service several times 3 hours before their customer service ended and no one called back. Voice messages only.β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€” The U1000 worked great right out of the box. It's fast and responsive with the iPhone app. I used to have a few Garmins that were only up front. Upgrading one of these (my wife and I own two cars) from FA200 to U1000 front and rear (1080p front; 720p rear; FA200). I was very happy with the performance of the FA200. However, the resolution wasn't the best, but it worked fine. I wanted something with a higher resolution that would work better at night (to get license plates/letters) with 2 channels (front and rear). The FA200 is a basic camera with robust features. The upper fairings are equipped with a Sony sensor that is better at detecting license plates at night. I was aware of this with the FA200 (lower model camera sensor which works mediocre at night) but DVRs were new to me back then (3 years ago at the time of writing this review) and I didn't want to spend money on them over $300. VCR. Thinkware has proven itself to be a quality product over time and I was willing to buy a 4k model (u1000) for around $500 (full set; front/back with filter). Police tried to give me fake speeding tickets (refused in court; one said I was going over 20+ mph when driving 5 mph less in the 35 mph zone; unfortunately there are lying cops out there (I'm a Veteran and supporter - the police (more than I'd like to believe.) and dash cams with built in GPS came to the rescue (I have an excellent driving experience.) Accidents and near misses by aggressive drivers in Orlando, Fla. I won't drive without it, as there are many uninsured motorists (illegals) and people who just casually get into cars, slam the doors of other vehicles (leaving costly damage/dents/scratches) etc. and drive away leaving you with a crazy car. Repair bills (cameras capture the license plate so you can send it to your insurance company.) A dash cam that proves your innocence is worth your peace of mind for a fraction of what my car could be worth and any legal problems. I live in Florida and several dash cams I've tried overheated and shut down in parking mode. I haven't had this problem with a Thinkware FA200 in years. The FA200 only records at 1080p (again 1080p front, 720p rear with moderate night images) and I looked at the Thinkware 2k (q800pro) because I was glad the FA200 could handle extreme temperatures with ease. However, what caught my eye was the recently released $100 U1000, which records in 4k. Setup was pretty easy. Simply route the cables under the padding. Some may struggle with the hardwiring if inexperienced, but with patience most people can do it themselves and figure it out. So far the U1000 works great (much faster in the iPhone app than the FA200) and I like the slim format that fits snugly on the windscreen. If you are considering the U1000 I would have no hesitation in recommending it. Thinkware doesn't skimp on this model and most people with DVR experience will be more than happy with it. This is one of the best, if not the best, DVR on the market. Yes I've looked at Blackvue...they have overheating issues and images get blurry when they get hot based on my experience so far.

Pros
  • Super Night Vision
Cons
  • Some issues
