I have been a retired dentist since 2009 and in my practice we paid more than you would pay online for a similar carbamide peroxide bleach. If you let a little bit of this bleach touch your gums for a while, you'll know. There is discomfort and possibly whitening of the gums, which does not last long. This doesn't cause permanent damage, but the result is a noticeable pain that can last for up to a day or so, depending on the length of exposure. You don't have to cover the entire enamel to whiten the entire visible tooth(s) effectively. If you cover 1/2 to 2/3 of the clinical crown (ie the visible part of your teeth), the bleach will whiten the entire visible tooth. The downside of this bleaching process is that the higher the bleach concentration, the faster the bleaching will occur, but there is also an increased risk of short-term sensitivity, so it is recommended to work more slowly as the exposure time increases. Another reason to cover only 1/2 to 2/3 of clinical tooth crowns is the problem of swallowing excess carbamide peroxide. I don't think it's a problem, but there's no point in swallowing everything you don't need. I don't think the FDA or researchers have shown any evidence of carbamide peroxide toxicity or we would have known about it, but use as little as possible to get the job done. I find this product very effective and can only recommend it.
