I've read a few reviews of Marinelands Carbon recently and heard it's almost like sand or literally melts when wet. With the zippered mesh bags I received, this would be the first issue as the holes in the mesh bags are much larger than the grains of sand. I would say they range from a grain of rice to the diameter of a small pea. It can be difficult or tiring to work with something dull and grainy. It's not hard to put something in your pocket, but make sure you don't inhale that charcoal dust. It also takes time to wash off the dust, and when that happens you need to take a sponge and wipe the sink. Filter, water flow goes to post filter of additional cleaning (10 gallons). For a 20 gallon tank I filled it up about a cupful and a few more pieces of Biomax ceramic, placed it in the filter and took out the original filter pad and the water was crystal clear within 2-3 hours. There is absolutely no smell even after feeding. Call me crazy but even the air smells fresher and fresher. It's possible that it actually purifies the air as well. But from such a small amount? unbelievable
