I'm reviewing the Jewel color set.First off, let me tell you a little bit about me: I am brand new to the world of embroidery. I just bought a Singer Futura XL-420 during a Black Friday 40% off Singer sewing and embroidery machine sale. Being a new embroider, I knew I was going to make mistakes while making my first projects and fiddling around with designs in my embroidery software. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on expensive thread just to throw the project away. When I saw this thread set on Best Buy, I bought it because the price was good, the colors were pretty, and at 40 spools per case, it gave me enough variety to really try out my new machine.I've tested the threads at various speeds with designs of varying densities. For fabric, I've used muslin and felt. At all times, I've used a size 75 needle.The good: The threads are incredibly soft and silky to the touch. The colors are gorgeous! Even on the muslin I've tested out the machine on, the colors really pop and are just breathtaking. They shine in the light. Overall, the look of the finished product is beautiful and I've been loathe to throw any of the test projects away.The bad: The threads are incredibly soft and silky to the touch. This leads to easy slippage from the spool and fraying when using my machine's built-in needle threader if it doesn't catch the thread just right. Even when using a thread net and a spool cap, if you don't have the spool cap down as tight as you can without impeding the thread while sewing, the thread will slip and wind around the spool holder, causing your needle to break. On the pack of five needles I bought, I have two left. I broke two within the first few hours. The third was while embroidering a design made unintentionally dense due to me messing around with my embroidery software. However, once I figured out how to avoid needle breakage, the amount of needles broken has decreased dramatically.On dense designs, the thread will break a lot, although some colors seem more prone to this than others. I don't know if the dye used on certain colors is making them weaker than the rest or what. I just know on one of the colors in particular, the thread broke so much, I seriously considered just scrapping the design before it had finished, just so I could use a different color thread on it.It can be very difficult to find the thread end on some of the spools. The darker colors are an especially big nightmare if you aren't in an extremely well lit room. Once used, there is nowhere to store the thread ends. You either need to cut a slit in the bottom of the cone or use a thread net or else you will wind up with soft, silky thread spilling out all over the place.The spools themselves are tiny. You will definitely want to use bobbinfil to help stretch how much you have. Also, you can forget about knowing what number the color is unless you write it by hand on the spool somewhere with a marker. You can't pull the little sticker off the end in one piece to stick it elsewhere since it's made to split into four pieces once the spool is placed on a spool holder for the first time.Overall, would I buy this product again? Actually, I would. To me, the price, variety of colors, and how pretty the thread looks once embroidered makes it definitely worth the headaches.
