I'm not new to computers, but new to trying to figure out how to install and configure emulators and control panels on Windows and Linux. I chose Higan and it was fairly easy/documented to install and run games with it. After agonizing trial and error and googling. I couldn't get these controllers to respond (even after matching inputs in settings and a specific emulator, a well-documented two-step process). Still does not work. What I haven't figured out yet is that you actually need to map every button and direction of the gamepad controller in the input settings (at first there is no setting, but then it shows up as joystick.xyz). I felt silly for not noticing this sooner but I was on the verge of returning them as I thought they were faulty. So I decided to share this. Now they work great and are way cheaper than nes mini since Higan and the games are free).
