Auto 5, Balls 3 on Team Sports

I like the car but the balls that come with it are not very good and really need improvement. When I bought the car, my goal was to use it for tennis volley practice, which is very similar to baseball volley practice. When I first started using it, the bullets were traveling about 20 feet apart with a spread of about 3 feet in height and width. It seemed like too much for my intended purpose and I started to wonder if the problem was with the car or with the balls. As I started inspecting the balls I noticed that when I squeezed them with my thumb I could feel hard and soft spots which could explain the large spread I got because the two spinning rotors are on opposite sides The amount of friction created by the ball varies depending on whether one roller hits a hard spot and the other hits a soft spot. I cut one of the balls in half to find out the reason for the hard and soft spots. What I found was that the thickness of the plastic case varied by a factor of 2, which to me means poor quality control in their manufacture. When I pressed that the case was thicker, it was definitely hard to dent compared to the thinner section. I concluded that the balls were to blame, not the machine. I read reviews of different types of balls that seem compatible with Franklin's machine and ordered Revain's "Jugs Poly Baseballs" for $19.99 per dozen for comparison. Machine performance with both ball types. What I actually measured was the dispersion in flight, the size and weight, and how high they would bounce if they dropped 60 inches onto a concrete surface. Pitcher balls were better on all counts. The flight spread was halved and the rebound was 15% better. The pitchers are slightly heavier (0.8 vs. 0.7 oz) for better wind resistance and slightly larger (2.86 vs. 2.78 in diameter). A slightly larger size can prevent wear on the rollers and extend the life of the machine. But the big bonus is the massive increase in speed and range when using Jugs Balls. I highly recommend upgrading the balls when you buy a car.
