We've bought a lot of Xbox controllers because none last more than a year or two, so let's see how they work. It seems to me that if we're going to spend decent money on a controller, it should last a long time (my 8-bit Nintendo controllers still work after 40 years and my Wii controllers still work after 15 years), so I get it that's not why all manufacturers make such crappy xbox controllers. I've had the worst success with official Microsoft controllers - they all died within 2 years - so I started looking at other vendors to see how it worked. They are not very comfortable in the hand, but bearable.
