Review on FreedConn KY Pro 4 Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset: Intercom Communication System For 4 Riders With 1200M Range & Bluetooth 5.0 (Single Pack) by Tuan Core

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good audio quality and features, range not as far as advertised

Freedconn has two headsets which have the "KY PRO" model name. I ordered both of them (ASIN B099J3H2TH vs B09752N6L6), and did not see any noticeable differences in appearance, features, or quality.Installing this headset from FreedConn isn't too difficult. There is the external unit that is mounted to your helmet, either with a clip or with double-sided tape. There are two ear pieces that are velcro'd inside your helmet -- some helmets have an area specifically for these earpieces with an appropriate indent, some don't, and either a wired mic that gets velcro'd inside the helmet near your mouth, or a boom mic if you have a half helmet. I am using this with a full face helmet, and I watched some random videos on YouTube to figure out how to install -- but really the only tricky part is detaching and reattaching the liner in the helmet and hiding the wires.SOUND QUALITYSound quality for voice intercom is actually quite good -- the mic picks up my voice clearly and I can clearly hear others. Again I don't actually ride a motorcycle so I can't really comment on how it handles noise from a loud motorcycle or wind noise, but at the low speeds I was riding, I didn't hear any bothersome noise.Music quality is pretty good. Honestly it doesn't compare to a headset designed for music, but it's more than adequate for background music while you're riding.FEATURES AND CONTROLSThis has a lot of features. In addition to the intercom, which supports pairing to different manufacturers, this supports connecting to phones and other devices for audio, and it has an FM radio. Pairing with my phone was quick and easy. This headset has few buttons on it -- you have the dial, a button on the dial, and the power on/off/intercom button. As a result, a lot of operations overload the buttons and you have things like short press vs long press, double taps, etc., which while I understand are really confusing and hard to remember. Still, the basic functionality is easy to access. For controlling a phone, the button on the dial is play/pause/pickup a call. A short turn of the dial clockwise or counter-clockwise is prev/next track, while holding the dial in a direction controls the volume. You can turn the intercom on/off with the power button. Anything else I need to refer to the manual. While this supports group intercom with up to 6 devices, I only had 2 devices (this and another one) to test. This also supports music sharing; while I did get it to work once, it has too many steps for me to remember. It's not really a feature I plan to use anyway.Controls can be used when wearing gloves.INTERCOM RANGEI am using this with another Freedconn KY Pro headset. The intercom range is unfortunately not as good as the manufacturer claims. I was testing in probably the worst area for range, NYC. The manufacturer's range claims are for open area, so perhaps in more rural areas you could achieve the advertised range of 1km, but in NYC, I got about 200 feet (60 m), or just under a city block, before the intercom was too garbled to use. However, I suppose if you need longer range, you could always use your phone.BATTERY LIFENeeds further testing, but on a short 30 minute ride the battery percentage didn't change.OTHERThis comes with some extra velcro tape and an adapter to connect to a walkie talkie. This uses a special connector (looks like a micro-USB) for the ear pieces and mic, so you can't use just any random headset, but replacements do seem to be available.CONCLUSIONGiven the current price, features, and sound quality, I would say this is a good buy for a motorcycle helmet headset. I've never had one before and it's quite refreshing to be able to have a conversation with the helmet on. My only complaint is the range on the intercom, but this is likely due to the extra harsh environment of the city. Overall I give it 4/5 stars.

Pros
  • 6 Riders Group Communication - KY Pro intercom are made of Qualcomm 5.0 chipset which makes pairing faster, it can transmit signals more stably and quickly, it's able to connect up to 6 riders speaker communication at the same time intercom distance up to 1200m(MAX distance between 2 bikers is 400m).
Cons
  • Poor Audio Quality
