For a beginner spot welder like myself, I find this to be effective with this tool: First, punch the pin where you want the pin to be centered. It's very important that Harbor Freight's sprung punches work great here. Second, align the tool and make sure the cutting ring is touching the part on opposite sides - if you enter at an angle too quickly, the tool will move off center. Practice driving the torch into the weld with the drill off. Third, enter very carefully to make the drill rotate at full speed; after the cutter has made a flat ring *around* the perimeter, grunt a little. This is to speed up the welding process. A piece of wax definitely helps, you can watch it melt as you cut.
