Review on Kenyon B41510 Mediterranean 2 Burner 120 Volt by Aaron Johnson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Quality materials, poor build quality control!

14 inch smooth finish electric hob Mediterranean Series, 2 fast heating hobs, analogue controls and textured black glass: 120 I ordered this product to replace my original spirit/electric hob with my 34-foot cruiser cabin. The item arrived on time but did not work. I installed the hob according to the instructions that came with it. When I turned on the hob the circuit breaker went off in the galley and also on the dock. I opened the back of the cooktop and found that the white (neutral) wire was not connected to the switch but was touching the frame. I was able to crimp and reattach the latch onto the terminal. Picked up the device and reinstalled it. in the tabletop. Turned it on and the switches worked again. I completely removed the hob and removed the entire back panel. I found that the black (hot) wire was never connected to the large heating element, but instead lay under the white lead wire and directly touched the grounded hob frame (causing a DIRECT short circuit). I "dug up" the wire and connected it to the hot terminal on the large burner. I still have to assemble the hob. I had to take a break but will be back on the boat this weekend for a third time reinstalling the hob. I hope this finally works. I am a retired electrical engineer with extensive practical experience in mechanics. I'm amazed that a $426 cooktop should come with such obvious defects and be returned if a less qualified buyer gets it. Get ready to send it back to make it work! I hope it works better in real use than out of the box. On the plus side it's a very attractive unit and when it's on the burner heats up quickly (the small burner turned on no problem. The big burner had all the bad "non-connections"). Physical installation was fairly easy as all I had to do was enlarge the existing post hole and install the two mounting brackets that came with it. Instead of covering it with a silicone roller, I decided to apply a 1/8 inch silicone caulking strip around the edge of the hole to even out any unevenness. (easier to withdraw the block). Post Install Update: 9th February 2013 - We have used the stove a couple of times at the end of last boating season and my wife is very happy with it! Heats up quickly and does its job perfectly. Very even heating and good control. I would have given five stars if there hadn't been any problems from the start. After all, what's the point if it doesn't work right away!
