I wish the safety lock would release the base of my tripod

Although I can't lock the quick release plate in place, the product itself is of very good build quality and works with all my other 323 RC2 plates. If you intend to use this on wide tripod bases or gimbals, you will most likely also need a stand to allow enough clearance for the quick release plate's locking pin to engage.
