As long as cats don't have a problem with it, there was an odor at first, but that dissipated overnight. Lucky for us having a right side opening worked for us but fair warning to anyone suggesting a left side opening. Overall, we like the device enough to keep it. We could use another one or two but after seeing the excessive amount of styrofoam in the packaging we won't be buying again until the seller changes the packaging. This is a product for animal lovers who seem to love all animals and want to protect the environment for wild animals. I used to work in furniture retail and you don't need Styrofoam for packaging, it's usually just the cheapest option. As soon as the seller decides to change this, we will be the first to order more.
