By passive lock I mean that the axle will lock and stop if the wheels on either side are spinning. I didn't want to spend money on more complex locking systems to install on the Dana35 axle. If I were a hardcore climber I would switch to Dana44 and otherwise spend a lot of money. This mechanism works really well on steep climbs over loose gravel and mud, locking things up when needed. I currently run 33 x 12.5 and have heard feedback that the locking function decreases with larger tires. I'll be taking 35 next year so we'll see how true that is. At the moment I really like this as a budget passive locker and have no complaints about it.
