Review on Mediasonic USB 3.1 4 Bay 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Enclosure - High-Speed USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C/USB-C (10Gbps) for Efficient Data Transfer by Don Kishore

Revainrating 4 out of 5

High performance at a reasonable price

I'm using this with a 2018 iMac Pro connected directly to a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C port. I run all SSDs in a non-RAID configuration. The speeds are as expected, depending on the SSD model. When I first ran it, I was also using Soft Raid and encountered data corruption, erratic Smart Status alerts, and spontaneous drive eject issues. Whether this is just related to Soft Raid or is there a conflict between Soft Raid and this device, I just don't know. I know that after I uninstalled all Soft Raid drivers, the problems went away. I also know that there are known issues with Soft Raid and the new iMac Pro that will hopefully be fixed in a future update. I love that you can change the fan speed or even turn it off completely. Small LEDs confirm drive activity and fan speed. The only downside was having to buy four different SSD tray adapters. If you use 3.5" hard drives, the standard configuration is sufficient, but if you use 2.5" drives, you have to factor in additional costs. It was still cheaper than any 4-bay Thunderbolt device, that's all. The lack of an onboard 2.5" drive adapter is the only reason I don't give it 5 stars, but to be honest it's mostly advertised for 3.5" drives. There's a lot of plastic used in the case construction instead of aluminum, but I think that's reflected in the price. In any case, it is not intended to be worn. For a device that spends its life quietly and unobtrusively on the desk, the case design is more than appropriate. All in all I would happily buy this unit again and am considering purchasing one of their Pro Raid models.

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • Lots of stuff
