Outperforms the competition

I purchased the Omega 8002 Juicer on the recommendation of Dr. Joseph Mercola, MD, who has a popular newsletter and website. We met him at a health fair, tried vegetable juices (including wheatgrass juice) and realized that juicing is a great way to get more vegetables into your diet. I mean how much broccoli and lettuce can a person eat in a day? Not as much. The Omega 8002 is a single gear machine that rotates at a low speed of 80 rpm, a powerful slow auger that does not heat food or foam juice. This protects the nutritional value of the juice from degradation. It's also "multifunctional" - the juicer can be used to prepare baby food, meat pie, nut butter or finely ground coffee. The machine is reliable, is said to be quiet and comes with a 10-year guarantee. Sounds good, so we put the money down, bought an Omega juicer and got to work. So what's it like to USE Omega? Well it's EASY to put together although there are quite a few parts and options to make. Essentially the steps are: 1. Insert a screwdriver - a large green plastic spiral into the plastic case.2. Slide the juice cone (kind of a strainer) over the auger so it fits into the casing around the auger. It requires a little juggling but falls well.3. Screw on end cap and nozzle.4. Attach this cover to the front of the juicing motor.5. Add a feeding platform to the top of the feed tube on the body.6. Place two collecting jugs under the body; one for the pulp, one for the juice. Now you can start juicing. Cut the vegetables into strips or chunks that will fit the 1.5 inch loading tube. So when making juice from carrots, those tasty large carrots need to be halved or quartered lengthwise. Turn on the motor: it has a forward direction to push the food out and a reverse toggle switch position to move the food back in case of a clog. I never had to do that.3. Press down vegetables or other foods with the plunger that comes with the juicer. Food is fed through the auger, crushed, and the juice is squeezed through a sieve (cone). The pulp comes out of the nozzle. Juice flows from below, closer to the engine.4. When you're done, turn off the motor, which is PERFECTLY quiet - not like a blender or vacuum. In comparison, it sounds more like a pasta machine or a food processor. Disassemble the machine and wash the parts. A large bottle brush is included for this purpose, very practical. Cleaning takes about 2-3 minutes and mainly consists of rinsing. The worst work is sifting the waffle, and even that doesn't take long to wipe away the pulp that's stuck to it. I do this as quickly as possible while sipping the juice because drying the pulp on the machine makes it difficult to peel. Then I reassemble it here and now and it's ready to go again. Cabbage Juice Omega, a fairly chewy, leafy, dark green form of cabbage. Now we can grow wheatgrass once we grow it or find a source of flat grain. Just for a smile, I tried an empty bag and ground the meat a little. It makes a fine grind - not what you would use for a hamburger. It is suitable for soft, somewhat grainy baby food or pies. I didn't try to make pasta. How does that compare to the spinning cup models like the Braun we've juiced up with in the past? 1. Rotating cup model (Brown) LOUD, very loud. This is because the cup is spinning at high speed, causing it to howl. This is typical for cup juicers. Looks like a blender.2. The Cup model cannot juice wheatgrass, the tender stalks of growing wheat or barley that are rich in antioxidants. It also cannot make tough leafy vegetables like cabbage.3. The Cup model definitely doesn't squeeze as much juice from fruit and veg as the Omega. The pulp in the cup model is a wet suspension. Omega pulp, on the other hand, is like slightly moistened sawdust - definitely drier. Therefore, while more expensive than typical rotating cup models, the Omega Juicer is quiet and efficient. This gives you the ability to juice and grind things that a rotating beaker can't handle, like wheatgrass and, if you want, meat. There's more juice and with current food prices, especially if you're buying organic, that's a huge benefit. The juicer is relatively easy to clean, assemble and use. If you're really serious about drinking vegetable juices or preparing fresh-squeezed fruit juices and baby food, I'd say this is a model to seriously consider over others. The performance and added functionality make up for the higher price well.
