The instructions are not in English, so you have to find out for yourself. Not once a month has my turtle's water been as super clear as it has with other filters (wanted to try this filter because it hangs on the outside of the tank and we wish it had more room). It is very difficult to get it working. My boyfriend and I spend at least 45 minutes getting it to work each time. You have to fiddle with the hose and attach it at different angles to get it to start. What is very annoying is that the parts do not fit together! The bit you want to suck will fall off at the slightest tap, so there's most likely little to no suction at times. Please don't waste your money and time. This is the worst filter I've ever had.
