Review on GSI Outdoors Personal Java Press by Justin Fletcher

Definitely NOT 30 oz but still good

First of all the product name says the GSI coffee press can produce 30 oz of coffee. In the actual product description, the capacity is correctly stated as 20 oz. There's a 30oz press, but it doesn't come with a matching mug. Now that we have a disclaimer, here's the rundown of that combo. I've been camping with GSI Big Abs for over a decade. He never failed to brew a delicious cup of coffee on the go, at home, or even in the office. It's just a little more than what I want to carry around when I'm alone. The 20 oz press is the perfect size for me. When I'm not at camp, it will be in my desk drawer at the office every morning. It will keep me from drinking the disgusting stuff they try to pass off as coffee. The included mug is a nice addition to your outfit when you want things to match and look pretty. But aside from being perfectly set in the press, it's just a mediocre mug. Mug packaging is negligible at best when it comes to adding insulation to keep your drink hot. Even worse, you can't remove it to clean it. I can only imagine how nasty it will look after a few backcountry rides. I plan on leaving the mug in the car's camp kitchen box. When it comes to using the abs, it's pretty simple. GSI recommends using coarsely ground coffee. This is probably the best option and makes cleaning a lot easier. However, thanks to the excellent compression ring seal, you can use a regular drip grind. We usually pre-measure the coffee and put it into very small ziploc bags lined up for each brew. Leaving the press assembled leaves room for a few days of Ziploc coffee bags above the press screen in the press. Of all the camping gear I've owned in over 60 years of camping, the GSI Press has been one of the most dependable pieces of gear in my arsenal. I assume that this new addition will also serve me well.
