Review on πŸ”₯ Brod & Taylor Foldable Proofer and Slow Cooker by Laura Wright

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works but too expensive for what it is. Will not work with most kombucha jars.

I bought this proofer to bake sourdough bread. I needed a way to control the fermentation temperature. As someone who has used commercial proofers and commercial incubators professionally, I was very surprised at the discrepancy between the (too high) price of this proofer and the (generally poor) quality and durability. This. This proofer is really just a cooker with a thermostat (or maybe even a rheostat) and a lid. It's not airtight/airtight like all the commercial proofers and incubators I've ever used. It's generally very thin, most of which is made out of cheap plastic. You have to be very careful with this thing if you want it to last as long as it should. Overall it works, although I haven't spent much time testing the temperatures to make sure they're accurate. . However, it would be nice if there was at least an attempt to seal it. This thing has to waste power to stay warm given the many significant gaps that let air in and out. Aside from the general lack of quality, one of the worst things about the design is that the fork sticks out at the front. (or sideways). Note that you don't see the actual connector plugged in in any of the images, likely because Broad and Taylor know this is a major design flaw and suspect you'll be less likely to buy it if you can see the cable sticking out the front. This will greatly reduce the number of places you can put this thing, and given its large footprint, it's a pretty big deal. a few inches larger so you can fit the gallon jars commonly used to make kombucha. This is just another indication that the design was not thought through and carefully considered. If it were a cheap proofer, all of the above disadvantages could be overlooked. But at this price it's overpriced. I think it's safe to say that the only reason this proofer is so popular is because it's the only one. Someone can easily make a much better proofer for less than half the cost. A cooktop, a thermostat with a temperature probe (it doesn't have one) and an airtight lid (this one doesn't have one) is all you need.
