Great toy once you know what it is!

I think this is a great toy; However, it has a high "cost of ownership" and you must understand what you are doing or you will be very disappointed. Firstly, it has a brilliant innovative function as a slot machine. It puts the player in a video game through a camera mounted on a box. However, in order to get a camera cheap enough for its price, they had to sacrifice quality; and what they sacrificed is the ability to work in low light. Here are a few examples of what doesn't work, so you can gauge if it will work for you: a) If the background the camera will be pointing at (ie what you see when you stand AWAY) is WHITE or otherwise bright is monochromatic, then it works. If the background is dark or very busy, the camera will not work. b) The place where we stand to play is 10 feet from the west-facing French door; The chamber works from morning to night with the shutters down. Closing the blinds or trying to use the system after dark does not work. c) The system can work under intense fluorescent light and - could - in a brightly lit room; but it doesn't work in normal "night" lighting. The next thing to note is that not many games are available. We have four in the original packaging, plus What a Mole and Dodgeball expansions. I will comment on each of the four games included as the quality of each affects the value of the product: a) Balloon Juggling - This game works very well with the camera. Basically, the player has to dance across the floor while catching imaginary balloons. The game can be made easier or more difficult by standing closer or farther from the camera. At 15 feet, the game was challenging enough to seriously tire an adult. At 8 feet tall, it can keep a 5 and 3 year old entertained for hours. b) Number Fishing is an educational game where the player has to calculate with 1 number and then catch a correctly numbered bubble. The exact nature of the difficulty limits its appeal to the 1-2 year old (usually 6-7) age group. c) Penguin Maze - The idea here is very cool. It's similar to a Packman game, except the player walks instead of pressing the joystick. However, the controls are so difficult to use (including hand movement over parts of the screen) that adults will have trouble getting through the first level. unless you have to dive to hit the ball. Like juggling a hot air balloon, this is difficult for an adult when far behind, but doable for small children up close. As such, it's a relatively unique idea that does a good job of bridging the gap between exercise and video games. You do need to have a room that can handle the lights, though, and you have to admit that you're paying $50 for two fairly basic games. (Although I will also be writing reviews for the other two games we have).
