Review on SVBONY Red Laser Collimator: Perfect Alignment for your Newtonian Marca Telescope by Matthew Kocur

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well after some initial setup.

This collimator works like any other of this style on the market. This is one of the cheapest laser collimators. There's a reason for that. QA seems to have missed the laser calibration step at the factory, after that it's actually ready to use. But there are key factors. It directs the beam to the center (as close as possible) of your focuser, secondary and primary mirrors. When I inserted the laser into the focuser and rotated it, the red dot on my primary mirror formed a 1.5 inch diameter circle. At this point I realized I would have to calibrate it myself. Luckily I read several other reviews. and forum posts and I knew what to do. After about 20 minutes of fiddling with the laser, I got it to give me a fixed point on the wall by spinning it on a DuBro RC plane's propeller balancer. (There are other methods on YouTube) Then I collimated my telescope and everything is fine. By the way, do not rely only on the laser collimator. There are many factors to align mirrors correctly other than aiming a laser at the center. Do a little research on YouTube and take the extra time to really calibrate everything. It will pay off in your observations and help you get the most out of your favorite telescope. Yes, you can spend extra money on Ho Tech or Orion, but that's bullshit. They may or may not need to be calibrated. It may take several transactions before you finally get one that doesn't require calibration when you take it out of the box. Who has time for that when there are things to see in the sky? I RIGHT?
