Useless against a determined cat

I needed a lockable cat door so my cat could get to the basement to her litter box and the lock is important as he sleeps there all night to keep him from coming to wake us up at 5am. I paid a handyman to install this door because I didn't have the tools. Looks great but my cat tore through it twice on the first morning because the locking tab is very short and he has already established that you can push a bottom corner and the door only opens over the tab. I'm so upset right now. It should have been an easy decision, but now I have to put something big and heavy outside the door every night. He'll pick the "lock" very soon because it's so easy to push the door hard enough to pop it out.
