Review on πŸ“€ Toshiba SD-5970 DVD Player with HDMI - Enhance Your Entertainment Experience by Mike Goodwin

Great picture quality and so cheap!

I have several DVD players to compare the Toshiba SD-5790 with: Sony's great two year old progressive scan (DVP-NS-700) all-in-one DVD player from Pioneer ( DV-563A) ) ) and the new Samsung DVD-HD841 (with up-converted DVI output). I project images onto a 92 inch screen via a high definition LCD front projector with DVI-D and progressive component video input. The Toshiba SD-5970's picture quality via the HDMI output (720p or 1080i) is *simply* better than any of these players and *much* better than the truly awful Samsung (which gets hyped everywhere). Unlike Samsung, Toshiba's picture is dense, voluminous, with good color balance, and free from grainy artifacts (which bother Sony and Pioneer). The Toshiba's image is sharp and detailed, unlike the Samsung, which is *very* soft and fuzzy. The Toshiba actually again has amazing detail in the dark areas of the picture, in contrast to the terrible Samsung. Toshiba does an excellent job of both video and film recording. Of all my other players, only the Sony handles both video and film well, but the Sony suffers from a lot of progressive scan artifacts (ringing, ghosting, etc.). This player also plays CD-Rs with WMA files and JPEG photos well. The only downside to this turntable is its ergonomics. The included remote control is (by far) not the best. Even with the (better) Toshiba universal remote control, the player still reacts sluggishly to commands. I also had problems with the player freezing. Besides that, what do you expect from the reserve price? It's also worth noting that setting up Toshiba's HDMI output is a hundred times easier than setting up Samsung's DVI. It's as simple as the flick of a switch, whereas at Samsung it's a pretty Byzantine process. Overall, I was very impressed with the Toshiba SD-5970. I've had many DVD players and this one has the best picture quality - the HDMI output really makes a difference and is well implemented. For the price I highly recommend it. I don't know how this player compares to the more expensive new HDMI upconverted Denon or Sony players. Hope,

Pros
