Tension Headache: Lighting and Ceiling Fans

The size of this light fixture was perfect for replacing an old fluorescent light bulb under a broken closet. But the installation is more difficult than it should be. The light consists of two main parts: the housing, which is attached to the bottom of the body, and the electrical components or "cables" which include all the wires, the power switch and the ballast. and lamp sockets. The cable cover is held in place by tension alone, with the edge of the cover hooking into two tiny lugs on the case. The case has three cutouts for cables coming out of the case - left, middle and right. The wires coming out of my closet are on the right side but not quite and not very long so I had to drill another hole in the case to accommodate them. It wasn't too difficult nor was it tying the black and white wires together with nuts. There is also a green ground wire in the box. The instructions say to connect it to a ground wire coming out of the closet and to a terminal on the unit. But there is no terminal to connect. There is an empty slot on the back of the power button. Maybe that's what the instructions meant? I'm not sure, but one end of the green wire is bare wire and the other is a round piece of metal with a hole in the center that you can press on with a screw head. Neither end went into the empty slot on the power button. I attached the ground wire to the screw that holds the lamp socket in place. I don't know if this properly grounded the unit, but there was no other screw to attach the ground wire to. with ballast and power switch on the right side of the line. Once all electrical connections have been made, the cable cover must be snapped into place behind the two tabs in the housing. On the right side, where most of the electrical components were crammed together, that proved impossible. The cable cover couldn't be compressed enough to snap into place because there was too much material inside. Just enough tension to hold it in place. I ended up bending some of the metal and scratching the finish while trying to assemble it. Since it's invisible under my closet, no one will notice. The instructions are a complete joke, and to the extent they're understandable (and most of the time they aren't), they force you to install the parts in the wrong order. There are a few pieces of metal in a small plastic bag, as well as some wire nuts, but there's no explanation as to what the hardware is or what to do with it. The bottom line is if you can figure out how your old device is connected. , you will understand how to install a new one. But good luck trying to fully close the lid after you've made the electrical connections.
