I bought two skeins of orange and two skeins of purple. The first strand worked great and I was surprised when I had problems with the second. I heard the reviews, but looked closer, the battery holder is so tight that the spring does not press one of the pluses against the contact (see picture). I adjusted it and all is good! Other reviews have also complained about the batteries rotating in the holder. You need to insert the connectors into the controller until it clicks, like a 9 volt battery (pictured). The remote needs to be fairly close (2-3 feet) to the controller, so I'm not sure how useful that actually is. This saves you the hassle of switching modes and turns on dimming. I like the second mode that looks like twinkling lights.
