Review on ๐Ÿ’ก Furman Sound 8 Outlet Surge Protector by Chris Horton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent quality and functional protection - at a reasonable price.

One of the biggest scams in electronics is the marketing of surge protectors, specifically the manufacture of extremely cheap MOV only surge protectors that are overpriced. Several well-known manufacturers have been guilty of this marketing scam (grossly overpriced for a cheap product that actually offers limited protection). Although Furman has been criticized by some of its competitors for making "false" claims about its SMP protection (Furman in particular claims that its SMP protection is "true" sequential mode protection), it is clear that Furman's products are just that do what they should do. - Protect your sensitive equipment (without sacrificing yourself) and at a relatively cheap price. The PST-8D offers what I consider to be the best feature set, and I consider it an entry-level surge protector. Because when I'm looking at a surge protector, I'm not looking at the Joule rating or the nameplate - I'm looking for a functional set of features that actually do what a surge protector is supposed to do: provide overall protection for your gear. The main PST-8D features that I think are critical are the "hybrid" serial mode protection (SMP: yes, they use MOV in the design, but integrated into their proprietary serial mode circuitry and in a way , which prevents MOV from turning into one). -temporary sacrificial components); functional noise filtering (LiFT: Linear Filtering); and Emergency Power Shutdown (EVS). A nice feature of the PST-8D is the isolated banks (2 groups of 4 outputs each) - that's the letter "D" in the PST-8D. This allows you to separate components that produce "noise" from more sensitive components on the same power strip. All of these features provide unmatched protectionโ€”and at 1/2 to 1/3 the price you would pay for a Brick Wall or SurgeX series surge protector. Please see Neil Isenberg's excellent review if you would like to take a closer look at some of the technical aspects of the PST-8D. The only negative criticism I have of this surge protector is that it's large, heavy, and unwieldy. Furman makes a much more compact surge protector (AC-215A), but the AC-215A costs about $50-60 more than the PST-8D, the AC-215A offers no cable protection and only has two outlets. The PST-8D's design also looks dated/primitive and the power button protrudes, which can be annoying if the power is accidentally turned off.
