Weird holes where they shouldn't be.

When I brought this shelf, I dutifully opened it up and examined it. I thought it looked good and would work for me. Now after a couple of weeks I was able to assemble this shelf and found a serious crack and several screw holes where the screws didn't belong. I originally saw the holes but assumed they were necessary for assembly. It's not like this! They're also on the front edge of the shelf, so there's no way to hide them. It appears that this shelf was made from reclaimed wood with holes. Next to. It is durable, easy to install and very beautiful.
