Review on BatteryMINDer SCC 180 180 Watt Maintainer Desulfator by Bill Howard

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A good deal if you have a good battery that doesn't run out by more than a few percent.

I have 2 of these. They arrived on time, easy to set up following the instruction manual, one worked straight away and the other required an extra charger to charge the battery above 12.12v. Both didn't get hot at 2 amps (around 70 F). . 3 problems: 1) It always seems to require an additional charger when your battery voltage drops below 12.12V. Switching a panel between direct battery charging and SCC power is time consuming and only works if you're charging longer than I'm ready to serve, so you'll need a second charger with adjustable auto shutoff.2) Sometimes it's trickier: even at 5A solar power and if you want to leave it on for half an hour, sometimes the dead battery voltage has also dropped quickly for SCC as I repeatedly tried to move the inputs from the solar panel directly through the batteries to the charger's input terminals. Had to ramp up the charger this way when the battery voltage was between 12.5-13V, but maybe the rate of fall was causing something in the charger to tell it not to charge in those conditions. In the past, the battery technician could only do a small amount of battery maintenance on a tight schedule if you were tending to the tender. 3) a very free temperature sensor connector; In fact, every time I picked up the charger, it fell into the car's battery compartment and fell twice while walking, so I tied the connectors together with a small knot.

Pros
  • SOLAR - The BatteryMINThe SCC-180 is a 12V, 16A model that actively monitors the voltage and temperature of your battery whenever the sun rises. Works with solar panels with a power of up to 200 W and a voltage of no more than 25 volts. (Solar panel NOT INCLUDED). The battery must have at least 11 volts.
