For my average height and thin 13 year old wife, I took a size 14 in black. The shorts fit perfectly. At first he complained that the shorts were too long, but of course they shrank in the wash due to the cotton. He tells me they feel great, no need to adjust the waist with a regular drawstring because they're made for regular kids. Not hard. I'll sew up the pockets a bit so he doesn't lose his phone. Everything is fine with pockets, but for me it would be calmer. All in all I think they are expensive.
