Installed over 2 years ago, still in good condition. There was another problem with the old ignition wiring.

I bought for a John Deere LX173 with a 15hp Kohler engine. It fits perfectly. It seemed like a good $50 deal when the Deere price was $300, or almost $200 for an original Denso type from a small motor shop. I bought it in December 2017 and since April 2020, just over 2 years old, I've been having trouble starting again. The reason I'm writing this review now is that I was initially frustrated and thought that after a few years this starter would have gone bad. Others who wrote bad reviews may have had this problem and not noticed it. When I went between the terminals of this starter with a jumper wire, metal screwdriver or something similar (battery cable clamp to flat blade terminal), it flipped EVERY time. (Make sure the gear isn't in neutral for safety, and I also held the key in the off position for this test so the engine wouldn't start, just crank it. When I turn the key, to to try to start, i just make a click, every time i tried that many times i knew the problem was in the wiring, it's a common problem with garden tractors of a certain age or even some vintage ones -Tractors, getting resistance in the wiring going from the ignition switch through the wiring to safety switches like neutral on shift and seat switch to the starter motor and there is not enough current to power the solenoid on the starter motor, this can happen with old high resistance ones wires pass, or your battery dies In that case I hope this helps some people if their old starter is bad or if it's just yours cabling lies. Or does the starter really need to be replaced? I also think some of the bad reviews on here might be because the person writing this didn't know it was the problem and this replacement starter is actually fine. If it's the wiring then a good lawnmower shop should definitely have a 'relay' to fix the wiring problem, it comes with instructions and shouldn't be very expensive. The relay supplies power to the starter solenoid more easily.

Pros
  • Large fit for me
Cons
  • No instructions
